Having a Career with Unilever, a Message from the VP of HR

Well, I wrote this in a very hurry situation. Very bad writing report, but I hope it will still be usefull for the reader. Thank you.


Unilever Indonesia is a company established since 1933, or 82 years ago. This company since the first establishment until today still consistent move in the consumer goods industry. But, they continuously extend the product line and today they have seven product sector such as ice cream, fabric conditioner, household care, skin care, baby personal care, soy sauce, and fruit juice. Under the vision to earn love and respect of Indonesian by touching the life of every Indonesian every day, Unilever has come this far.

I have the opportunity to hear some messages from the vice president of human resource of this company. She is Mrs Enny Sampurno. Mrs Enny has been working in this company for 24 years and except human resource, she had experienced in some position such as finance, logistic, and supply chain.

She told us about the secret behind optimum performance of human.

First is the balance of S pillars. There are three aspect of Q that we should balance. They are EQ, IQ, and SQ. IQ to determine the capability, EQ to determine the will. and SQ to determine the purpose.

Second is to build the technical expertise. We should get our hand dirty and improve technical skill.

Third, we should build the good interpersonal relationship such as; we should be able to deliver through people, be able to delegate and engage. and also have a good conflict handling intention which consider and concern with the interest of others.

She said that she learn most a lot from her difficult losses. So she suggests us to not give up, and keep asking why until we find the core of the cause. That kind of learning in loss situation also make her think that we should get out from the comfort zone because it make us not learn anything which will lead to the arrogance and destruction at the end. But in spite of that, she believes also that career should be planned and manage.

Fourth we should consider with energy management; time allocation, energy we spend for family, work, social, we should be able to manage it well.

Fifth she told us to be an open minded people. We should keep learning or otherwise this world will leave us behind. Everything change, quickly. People nowadays should always adapt and learn with that change.

Sixth she suggests us to take care of ourselves by keep sharpening our saw and self-care activity. Have enough time to do something we like that makes us happy and grateful,

After that, we had a question and answer session. There were some good and nice question, but I think the question I like the most is about Mrs. Enny adaptation process after in finance and go to customer service. She made mistakes and get a lot of pressure from the boss especially. But she didn't give up. She didn't feel shame to learn from her subordinate, asking them even very simple matter which she didn't understand about. And then, she established a small win, communicate it to the boss and achieve it. Her subordinate then think that their boss is capable and things started to get better.
